Live bait fishing

A long, proud Panama tradition — and one of the most productive ways to fish the Gulf.

While live baiting has grown common around the fishing world, Panama has practiced it for generations. Our captains are good at it, and it is highly productive.

There are two general methods here. We slow-troll big baits — most commonly bonito — for black and blue marlin, big yellowfin tuna, and even cubera snapper and big roosterfish.

We also free-line live blue runners and goggle eyes, both inshore and offshore. Offshore, these are great baits for yellowfin tuna, sailfish and dorado. Inshore, everything eats them — roosterfish, cubera and all manner of snapper, many kinds of jacks, bluefin trevally, grouper and more.
